Coach Akonnor calls for focus as league resumes

September 16, 2026

Head coach Charles Akonnor has urged his players to quickly turn the page on their CAF Champions League campaign and shift the full attention to the new domestic season, which gets underway this weekend.

With the continental campaign now behind them, Akonnor says the players must respond with greater concentration and responsibility as Gor Mahia begin the quest for another successful season.

“The Champions League is over, we have got to focus. The draw was a little harsh on us but that is not an excuse,” Akonnor said.

The Ghanaian tactician acknowledged the difficult continental assignment but insisted Gor Mahia cannot afford to dwell on what went wrong, instead challenged the players to raise their level as they return to domestic action.

“It is about the players getting to wake up because this is their job. Such mistakes are not acceptable, we have got to focus,” he added.

Akonnor’s message comes as Gor Mahia prepare for the resumption of the Kenya Premier League, with the club now turning its attention to the domestic title race

The coach will be hoping his charges can put the continental disappointment behind them and channel their energy into the league, where they will be looking to make a strong start to the new campaign.

Focus now shifts from continental football to the domestic battle, with every point set to matter as K’Ogalo begin pursuit of another league triumph.
