Gor Mahia Secretary General (SG) Nic Arum has called for patience with head coach Charles Akonnor, insisting the Ghanaian tactician should not be judged harshly following the club’s early exit from the CAF Champions League.
Arum believes it would be unfair to place the blame entirely on Akonnor, pointing to the limited competitive football the coach had been exposed to before the continental campaign.
“We cannot blame the coach and judge him for our exit from the Champions League. He was not exposed to competitive matches before this campaign, and that is something we have to consider,” Arum said.
SG Arum pointed to the unpredictable nature of football, noting that every match can produce one of three possible outcomes.
“In football, there are only three results – a win, a draw or a loss. We have to accept that and learn from what happened,” he added.
Akonnor had also guided the club to the final of the CECAFA Club Championship, despite having limited competitive fixtures under his belt, something Arum believes should be taken into account when assessing his work so far.
“Even in CECAFA, we cannot blame the coach. He was not subjected to competitive football before the tournament, but he still managed to take the team to the final. Let us give him time and see what will come out of it,” Arum stated.
The Secretary General further urged Gor Mahia supporters to give the coach time to implement his ideas rather than rushing to conclusions after the Champions League disappointment.
