As we prepare to take on Bandari this Friday at the coast, we take a trip down memory to when we secured a league title at the coast. The 1995 league season was one of grit, character and resilience for Gor Mahia.
Having lost the 1994 title to Tusker (then Kenya Breweries FC), we entered the new campaign determined to bring the trophy back home. But the journey would be anything but easy.
With a record 24 teams competing, the season was long and unforgiving. We started brightly with wins over Re-Union and Utalii, but a rough patch followed, dropping points against Nzoia, Mumias, Ulinzi, and AFC Leopards in our next five matches.
However, we responded like champions. An incredible run of eight consecutive victories between matchweek 8 and 15 that included a 7–0 demolition of Silver Stars and a 4–0 win over defending champions Tusker thrust us back into the title picture. Tusker, though, refused to go away, finding form of their own and ensuring the title race would go down to the wire.
Decisive day in Mombasa
On 12 November 1995, everything came down to our final league match away to Bandari at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium. The equation was simple, win and we are champions, lose and we give Tusker a slimmer of hope as they trailed us by five points but held a game in hand.
By 3:00pm, the stadium was filled to the brim. Gor Mahia fans from across the country had created an atmosphere so electric that Bandari felt like the visiting side. The roar grew even louder when club patron Joel Nyaseme walked onto the pitch to greet supporters moments before kickoff.
Bandari started strongly, forcing our backline into early action with two close scares and two early corners. But once we settled, Gor Mahia took control. In the 25th minute, Pius Wamaya delivered a perfect corner, and Tom Ochieng rose high to power home a bullet header, giving us the crucial lead going into halftime.
Early in the second half, an injured Steve Omondi made way for Dan Shikanda, and the substitution changed everything. Shikanda tormented the Bandari defence from his first touch, turning the game firmly in our favour.
Just 10 minutes after coming on, Shikanda set up Pius Wamaya, who slotted home the second goal. In the 75th minute, Shikanda produced yet another moment of brilliance laying the ball on for Steve Odiaga, who made it 3–0 and sent the entire stadium into wild celebration.
When the referee Abdul Aziz Mohammed blew the final whistle, the title was officially ours clinched on the coast, in one of the most memorable away victories in our history.
