As we gear up for another Kenyan Premier League campaign, a look back at the club’s Matchday 1 record over the past ten years shows a tradition of starting strong.

K’Ogalo have won the majority of their opening fixtures, with only a single defeat across the last decade.

Match Results

  • 7 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss in the last 10 opening fixtures.
  • The only defeat came in the 2018/19 season, a 1-2 loss to Bandari FC.
  • The two draws were:
    • 1-1 vs Sofapaka on opening day of the 2023/24 season
    • 0-0 vs Chemelil FC in 2016, the only time in the past decade we have failed to score in a Matchday 1 fixture.

Goals Record

  • Gor Mahia have scored 22 goals and conceded only 7 across their last 10 opening fixtures.
  • Their most emphatic start came in the 2019/20 season, a 5-2 win over Tusker FC, which stands as their highest-scoring Matchday 1 in recent times — just one goal short of the 6-2 victory over Kimilili FC in 1972.

Individual Records

  • Meddie Kagere netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Nakumatt in 2018, one of only three Gor Mahia players to score a hat-trick on opening day in club history.

The others are:

  • Martin Ouma vs Kimilili FC (6-2) in 1972
  • Abdalla Shebe vs Bata Bullets (5-2) in 1986
  • Benson Omalla has written his name into K’Ogalo history by scoring in three consecutive opening day fixtures (2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24). He joins the legendary Allan Thigo, who achieved the same feat between 1976 and 1978.

A Tradition of Strong Starts
This track record highlights our consistency and ability to set the tone early in the season. With history on our side, K’Ogalo will once again look to begin the upcoming campaign with a statement performance, as fans anticipate whether new heroes will rise to extend the club’s proud Match Day 1 tradition.
