Departure of long-serving winger Sammy Onyango, affectionately known as “Daddy” among the Green Army faithful is confirmed.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 11, 2025, the club announced that Sammy will be leaving when his contract expires in September 2025.
“We are grateful for his contributions and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” the Executive Committee stated.
Onyango joined Gor Mahia ahead of the 2017–2018 season following impressive spells with Sony Sugar and Ulinzi Stars. Over the years, he became a key part of K’Ogalo’s attacking force, contributing significantly to the club’s domestic and continental success.
He leaves the club having scored 35 goals in all competitions, including 27 in the league and 5 in continental action. Among his standout performances was a brace against Nigeria’s Lobi Stars in the 2019 CAF Champions League, and a crucial opening goal against APR (Rwanda) in the 2021 return leg that sparked a memorable 3–1 comeback victory to overturn a 2–1 first-leg deficit.
After a brief stint in Zambia and later with Kenya Police FC having departed in 2022, Onyango returned to Gor Mahia for the 2024–25 season, offering experience and leadership in his final campaign with the club.
Sammy Onyango departs as a respected veteran who embodied commitment, consistency, and big-game temperament throughout his time in green.
Thank you, Daddy — Once Green, Always Green.
