As another league season gets underway tomorrow, there is a familiar target on our horizon, 23.
After reclaiming the Sportpesa League crown last season to make it a record-extending 22 league titles, K’Ogalo now begin another campaign with the opportunity to stretch that record even further.
No other club has lifted the Kenyan league trophy as many times as Gor Mahia. Our 22 championships put us ten titles ahead of Tusker FC and AFC Leopards, who have 12. But our dominance is not only measured by trophies.
59 seasons at the top
The 2026/27 campaign will mark our 59th appearance in Kenya’s top-flight league.
Only AFC Leopards, who were formed earlier than Gor Mahia and are making their 60th appearance, have featured in more top-flight seasons.
Since entering the league in 1968, however, K’Ogalo have never missed a season. That gives us 58 consecutive top-flight appearances, a remarkable record that stands well ahead of Tusker FC’s 47 and Ulinzi Stars’ 34.
For nearly six decades, Gor Mahia have remained part of the country’s top flight, season after season, generation after generation. And now we go again.
2,500 goals and counting
Goals have always been part of the Gor Mahia story.
Last season, we reached another remarkable milestone when we scored our 2,500th league goal, adding another chapter to a scoring history that stretches back to our inaugural league campaign in 1968.
Walter Molo wrote his name into history by scoring our first-ever league goal. Since then, 310 different players have found the net for K’Ogalo in league competition.
At the top of that illustrious list is the legendary Sammy Onyango “Jogoo”, who leads our league scoring charts with 80 goals.
Close behind him are:
* Hesbon Omollo — 75 goals
* Allan Thigo — 66 goals
* George Yoga — 54 goals
* Benson Omalla — 53 goals
These numbers represent generations of Gor Mahia goalscorers, from the pioneers of the 1960s and 1970s to the modern-day stars who have carried the green shirt.
Who will be the next 20-goal man?
There is, however, one scoring milestone that has eluded us for some time.
We want another Gor Mahia player to finish a league season as the league’s leading scorer.
Benson Omalla came agonisingly close in the 2023/24 season when his 26 goals represented the highest single-season league tally by a Gor Mahia player.
That record now stands alongside some of the greatest scoring campaigns in our history.
Hesbon Omollo scored 23 goals in 1984.
George Yoga scored 23 in 1979.
Abbey Nassur scored 21 in 1981.
The question for the new season is simple: Will another K’Ogalo striker join the 20-goal club? Will another name emerge to join the great Gor Mahia goalscorers?
The hunt for No. 23 begins
Twenty-two league titles.
Fifty-nine top-flight appearances.
Fifty-eight consecutive seasons in the top flight.
2,500 league goals.
310 different league goalscorers.
While the numbers tell a story of longevity, consistency and success for Gor Mahia, history is never the destination. There is another title to chase.
