We capped off a successful weekend at the coast by clinching the ODM@20 Tournament title, overcoming Shabana FC in the semi-finals before edging Bandari FC 1-0 in the final at Mbaraki Sports Club.
Saturday: Penalty Drama as Gor Mahia Edge Shabana
In Saturday’s semi-final, we booked our place in the final after a tense 1–1 draw with Shabana FC, winning 4–3 on penalties.
The Green Army took the lead late in the first half through Samuel Kapen, who reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to slot home past Shabana goalkeeper Caleb Omondi. Shabana fought back after the break, equalizing through Henry Obinno but despite both sides creating chances to win it in normal time, the match went to penalties.
We held our nerve from the spot, converting four out of five attempts to seal the victory and progress to Sunday’s final against Bandari.
Sunday: Adu-kwaw Free Kick Fires Gor Mahia to Glory
Less than 24 hours later, we returned to the Mbaraki pitch to face hosts Bandari FC in the final, and once again rose to the occasion.
After a cagey first half that ended goalless, substitute Ebenezer Adu-kwaw produced the decisive moment in the 64th minute, curling a stunning 35-yard free kick over the wall and into the top corner past Bandari goalkeeper Levis Opiyo.
Bandari had started strongly, forcing our goalkeeper Kevin Omondi into early saves and once we took the lead, our defensive line stood firm to protect the narrow lead until the final whistle.
Head coach Charles Akonnor rotated his squad heavily for the two matches, giving opportunities to several fringe players while resting key names like Ebenezer Adu-kwaw, Enock Morrisson, and Bryton Onyona. Austine Odhiambo, Sylvester Owino, Ben Stanley, Michael Kibwage, Alpha Onyango and Bryne Omondi were away with the National team.
The result showcased the team’s growing depth and competitive spirit.
