We moved up to second in the Sportpesa League after a dominant display to beat hosts Mathare United 2-0 at the Kasarani stadium on Thursday afternoon.
A commanding first half by Gor Mahia bore no fruit as K’Ogalo wasted countless chances against a defensive Mathare United side.
Shariff Musa was a live wire on the left flank but his efforts were wasted by a blunt forward line.
Musa showed his pedigree first in the 12th minute, turning the Mathare United right back inside out, and his final cross was tapped wide by Patrick Essombe.
Four minutes later, Shariff was at it again, this time feeding Austin Odhiambo whose tap in was saved by keeper.
We upped the tempo in the 38th minute, Samuel Kapen with a beautiful dummy, but his cross was put out for corner, taken quickly, with Essombe’s free header going wide.
Esombe should have given us the lead in the 43rd minute, but after dancing through three defenders, he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
In the second half, Sharrif Musa finally made Mathare to pay with a beautiful finish from a Paul Ochuoga sublime cross.
With their tails up, Gor should have doubled the lead, Musa Shariff’s hard work on the flank not rewarded as his cross went begging across the goal mouth.
Mathare’s only threat came from Nyawira’s cross in the 56th minute with chance fluffed, and a speculative shot from outside the box in the 79th minute saved by keeper Bryne Omondi.
We then made a double substitution to bring in Bryson Wangai and Ben Stanley for Patrice Essombe and Alpha Onyango.
Mathare tried to push for an equaliser but were hit by a sucker punch, Wangai scoring from a tight angle in the third minute of added time to give us all the three points.
