Gor Mahia cruise past Mara, reclaim top spot

January 18, 2026

Gor Mahia continued their strong run at the summit of the SportPesa League with a convincing 3-0 victory over Mara Sugar at home, underlining their title credentials with a composed and dominant performance.

K’Ogalo took control early in the contest and were rewarded in the 14th minute when Felix Oluoch opened the scoring. The forward notched his seventh goal of the season, calmly converting a superb cross from Paul Ochuoga to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The pressure continued to mount on Mara Sugar, and Gor Mahia doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. New signing Jackson Dwang played a key role, providing the assist for Musa Shariff, who made no mistake in finishing to put daylight between the two sides before the break.

Gor Mahia remained in control throughout the second half, dictating the tempo and limiting the visitors’ attacking threat. The result was sealed late in the game when Samuel Kapen struck in the 84th minute, benefiting from excellent work by Ebenezer Assifuah to cap off a polished team display.

The win returned Gor Mahia to the top of the league table on goal difference, a day after being briefly displaced by arch-rivals AFC Leopards. With the two sides now locked in a tight title race and K’Ogalo still holding a game in hand, the championship battle is shaping up to be an enthralling one.

Speaking after the match, head coach Charles Akonnor praised his players’ composure and decision-making.

“We controlled the game and had many options, whether attacking from wide areas or playing through the middle,” Akonnor said. “The players had the freedom to make decisions and they made the right ones. They were calm, they processed everything well, and we are very happy with the performance.”

With momentum firmly on their side, Gor Mahia will look to build on this result as the title race gathers pace.
