Coach Kobi: Focus shifts to weekend’s game

Gor Mahia returned to training on Tuesday following the weekend’s disappointing cup exit, with the technical bench urging the squad to quickly refocus ahead of Sunday’s league encounter against Ulinzi Stars.

Assistant coach Bismark Kobi acknowledged the frustration surrounding the cup result, emphasizing that the performance fell short of the club’s standards.

“The cup exit result was not good and we needed the players to understand the embarrassment. What happened was unacceptable because this is Gor Mahia,” Kobi said after Tuesday’s training session.

He added that the players had already taken responsibility for the result and that the team had now shifted its full attention to the upcoming league fixture.

“The players have accepted that they disappointed us. Now we have moved on from that disappointment and the focus is on the Sunday game against Ulinzi. It is going to be a very tough match and we need to prepare very well.”

Kobi expects a demanding contest, noting the different motivations driving both sides heading into the match.

“It will be tough because they are battling against relegation while we are fighting to stay at the top of the table.”

On the fitness front, the assistant coach reported minimal injury concerns within the squad.

“Apart from Felix Oluoch there are no major injury worries. Ebenezer Assifuah has a small knock but he trained with the rest of the team.”

Despite the weekend setback, Kobi was quick to highlight the team’s strong form since the start of the year.

“Even though we disappointed last Sunday, the team has done very well this season. Since the turn of the year we have played ten league matches, won eight of them and scored a lot of goals. We are on top of the league, so overall we are doing very well.”

With the title race intensifying, the technical bench wants the squad to channel the disappointment into motivation.

“Going into this game we have to stay focused. We have won some difficult matches already this season. We need to forget what has happened and instead look for the opportunity to respond for our supporters. We are looking forward to Sunday because we want to respond very well.”
