Gor Mahia legend Victor Ali Abondo is back at the club, this time, on the touchline.

The former midfield maestro has been appointed as the new head coach of Gor Mahia Queens, the club’s women’s team, in a move that reinforces the club’s commitment to nurturing talent from within its own ranks.

The appointment was officially confirmed by the club’s Secretary General (SG), Nic Arum, who revealed that Abondo will assume his new role effective tomorrow.

“We wish to confirm that Victor Ali Abondo has been appointed as the new head coach of our ladies’ team with effect from tomorrow,” Arum stated.

Abondo, who was a key member of the legendary 2015 Gor Mahia squad that clinched the league title unbeaten, now joins a growing list of former players taking up coaching roles at the club. Dan Makori and Erick Ochieng, are currently handling the club’s youth teams.

According to SG, Arum, the deliberate push to involve former players is part of a broader club philosophy.

“The club is keen on working with former players who understand the culture and needs of the club. It is also a way of rewarding them and providing a soft-landing ground after their playing days,” he explained.

Since retiring from competitive football, Abondo has remained active in the game, honing his coaching skills while handling various junior teams.

His deep understanding of the club’s traditions and his wealth of experience are expected to bring a new dimension to the Gor Mahia Queens as the team continues to grow.
