Pyramids become Gor Mahia’s fifth Egyptian opponent

September 4, 2026

Gor Mahia’s return to the CAF Champions League comes with a familiar test when K’Ogalo welcomes Egyptian Pyramids FC to Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, September 6, 2026, they will be facing their fifth different Egyptian opponent in continental football.

The meeting adds another chapter to a long-running Kenyan-Egyptian football rivalry that dates back more than five decades.

Before Pyramids, Gor Mahia had crossed paths with Al Ittihad Alexandria, Ismaily, Zamalek and ENPPI, producing some memorable victories, painful defeats and historic moments along the way.

  1. Ismaily – the first Egyptian test

Gor Mahia’s first encounter with an Egyptian club came in 1969, when they faced Ismaily in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Champions Clubs.

The Egyptians won the first leg 3-1 in Cairo, but Gor Mahia showed tremendous character in the return match in Nairobi, holding Ismaily to a 1-1 draw.

The result meant Ismaily progressed 4-2 on aggregate, but Gor had already announced themselves as a club capable of competing against Africa’s established giants.

  1. Zamalek – A rivalry filled with drama

Zamalek have been Gor Mahia’s most familiar Egyptian opponent.

The first meeting came in the 1984 African Cup of Champions Clubs, in a controversial encounter that saw Zamalek being awarded the tie after Gor Mahia players protesting against the match officials.

The two sides met again in 1994, with Gor holding Zamalek to a 1-1 draw in Nairobi before losing 2-1 in Cairo.

Four years later, Gor finally got the better of the Egyptian giants.

In the 1998 CAF Cup, Steve Okumu scored the only goal as K’Ogalo defeated Zamalek 1-0 in Nairobi.

However, the joy was short-lived, Zamalek responded emphatically in Cairo, winning 4-0 to eliminate Gor on aggregate.

Those encounters established Zamalek as one of the most significant Egyptian names in Gor Mahia’s continental history.

  1. ENPPI – Another difficult Egyptian assignment

Another tough Egyptian opponent before was ENPPI, whom they met in the first round of the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup.

The trip to Cairo proved difficult, with ENPPI winning 3-0.

Gor Mahia fought back strongly in the return leg at Nyayo Stadium but could only manage a 0-0 draw, meaning ENPPI advanced 3-0 on aggregate.

  1. Al Ahly SC – the fourth man from Egypt to stand in Gor Mahia’s way

The first encounter with Al Ahly SC came in the 2024/25 CAF Champions league but despite the hard fight from the green army, Al Ahly won both the home and away fixture by at least 3 goals apiece.

The record illustrates a difficult history against Egyptian clubs, but it also shows that Gor Mahia have repeatedly found ways to compete, particularly at home.

  1. Pyramids: A new chapter

Unlike some of Gor Mahia’s previous Egyptian opponents, Pyramids arrive with a very recent continental pedigree.

The Egyptian club won their maiden CAF Champions League title in 2025, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate to become the fourth Egyptian club to win Africa’s premier club competition.

That makes the assignment particularly daunting for Charles Akonnor’s side.

CAF’s draw has placed Gor Mahia at home for the first leg at Nyayo Stadium on September 6, before the return leg in Cairo on September 13.

For Gor, however, history offers both a warning and encouragement.

The warning is that Egyptian opposition has traditionally proved difficult.

The encouragement is that K’Ogalo have already beaten one of Egypt’s giants, Zamalek, and have produced strong home performances against Ismaily, Zamalek and ENPPI.

Pyramids are the fifth Egyptian club to cross Gor Mahia’s continental path.

But this time, K’Ogalo will hope the story ends differently. A strong performance at Nyayo would give Gor a platform to travel to Cairo with genuine belief, while progression would represent one of the club’s biggest continental achievements in recent years.
