Coach Akonnor’s rallying call

September 10, 2026

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has called for determination, the right mindset and maximum concentration as Gor prepares for the daunting task of overturning the first-leg deficit against Egyptian Pyramids FC on Sunday.

Akonnor insists that every detail will matter if his side is to keep the continental campaign alive.

Speaking during a recent media engagement after the team’s final preparations session, Akonnor said his charges have prepared well and are ready to fight for a positive result.

The Ghanaian tactician believes the second leg will demand a completely different level of focus from his players, especially against the Pyramids side that possesses considerable continental and domestic experience.

“We have prepared well for the game. We know what is ahead of us and we know the kind of opponent we are going to face,” Akonnor said.

“The second leg will require determination, the right mindset and a high level of concentration. If we can do the right things on the pitch, then we will give ourselves a chance.”

Akonnor has urged the players to remain mentally strong and avoid allowing the first-leg result to affect their confidence.

For Gor Mahia, the challenge is not simply about scoring goals but also about maintaining discipline and concentration throughout the contest.

The coach believes his players must execute their game plan with precision while taking their opportunities when they come.

“We have to believe in ourselves. We have to stay focused from the first minute until the last minute because in a game like this, one moment can change everything,” he added.

The final preparations in Nairobi provided Gor Mahia with an opportunity to fine-tune their tactical approach before embarking on their Cairo mission.

With the margin for error now extremely small, Akonnor’s message to his players has been clear: stay composed, remain concentrated and fight until the final whistle.
