Fresh off steering Gor Mahia to their 22nd Premier League crown, head coach Charles Akonnor has been named the SportPesa Premier League Coach of the Season.
The accolade caps a remarkable debut campaign for the gaffer, who took the reins at K’Ogalo just months before the season kicked off.
In his first season as head coach, Akonnor has not only delivered the league title but also rewritten the team’s tactical identity, guiding them to the summit with a commanding five-point cushion over arch-rivals AFC Leopards.
Under Akonnor’s stewardship across 34 league matches, Gor Mahia proved to be a model of consistency and efficiency. The record shows 20 wins, nine draws and a mere five losses, a statistic that underscores their dominance in a highly competitive season.
On the attacking front, his side found the back of the net 50 times, while the defensive organization, marshaled by Akonnor’s tactical discipline, conceded only 22 goals. The final points tally stood at an impressive 69, sealing the title in style.
“This award belongs to the players, the technical team and the entire Gor Mahia family,” Akonnor said after receiving the honor.
“To win the title in my first season is special, but to do it with a margin like this is a testament to everyone’s hard work.”
Gor Mahia’s triumph marked their 22nd league title, further extending their record as Kenya’s most successful football club.
With Akonnor at the helm and the Coach of the Season trophy now in hand, expectations are already building for what could be an even more dominant campaign next season.
