Alpha’s strike seals derby bragging rights

Gor Mahia edged past arch-rivals AFC Leopards 1-0 in a tense and high-stakes derby on Saturday, handing K’Ogalo a crucial victory that extends their lead at the top of the league table to six points with only five matches remaining.

In a match where the title race enters its most critical phase, both sides were desperate for maximum points. But it was Gor Mahia who dictated the tempo from the first whistle, dominating possession and pinning AFC Leopards deep inside their own half for the entire first period.

The league leaders carved out five clear-cut chances before the break, but a combination of wayward finishing and stubborn defending from Leopards kept the scoreline goalless. Despite the onslaught, Leopards survived the first half without conceding.

The second half produced a more balanced contest, as AFC Leopards grew into the game and pushed forward in search of a goal themselves. However, clear-cut opportunities remained scarce for both sides as the clock ticked toward a stalemate.

Just when a draw seemed inevitable, the deadlock was broken in the 82nd minute. Bryton Onyona delivered a well-weighted cross into the box and Alpha Onyango reacted quickest, latching onto the delivery to drive a powerful shot into the back of the net and send the Gor Mahia fans into delirium.

AFC Leopards threw bodies forward in the dying minutes in a desperate bid to level the scores, but they could not produce anything meaningful in the final third. Gor Mahia’s defense held firm to secure the narrow win.

In the end, it was a deserved victory for the league leaders, who outclassed their opponents for large stretches of the derby.

The 1-0 result not only hands K’Ogalo the bragging rights but also stretches their advantage at the summit as they hold it on 61 points, six ahead of Leopards.
