Gor Mahia’s rising full-back, Bryton Onyona has been one of the standout performers this season. His consistency, maturity, and fearless play down the flank not only solidified his place in the starting lineup but also earned him a maiden call-up to the Harambee Stars during the last set of friendlies in November.
Now, as we gear up for the 98th Mashemeji Derby this weekend at Nyayo Stadium from 3pm, Onyona shared his thoughts with the club’s media team, showing calmness and focus well beyond his age.
Reflecting on the team’s mood after the previous setback, Onyona acknowledges the need for a strong response.
“Preparations are going on well. We are working hard. We lost our last game, so we have to do much better and get a win to cement our position at the top of the table.”
He credits the technical bench for maintaining high standards and keeping the squad mentally ready: “The coaches are doing everything to get us ready. We just want to be calm.”
The Mashemeji Derby comes with unmatched intensity, emotion, rivalry, and pressure but Onyona is adamant that the team must remain composed:
“It is a derby so the pressure is there. There is no underdog in a derby; everyone wants to win it. But we want to stay calm and approach it like a normal game.”
In a mature message to supporters, he added: “We let the fans fight the war off the pitch while we fight ours on the pitch.”
As he prepares for this weekend’s Mashemeji Derby, Onyona’s mindset is direct: “The motive is just to play and win.”
With his confidence soaring and national team recognition already in the bag, the young full-back will be one of the players to watch when we battle AFC Leopards in one of the country’s most historic fixtures.
