Gor Mahia were officially crowned SportPesa Premier League champions on Sunday, securing a record-extending 22nd league title and further cementing the club’s status as the most successful team in Kenyan football.
The title marked a successful return to the summit after we narrowly missed out on the championship last season, officially dethroaning defending champions Police FC. The league crown had already been secured last weekend when closest rivals AFC Leopards failed to keep pace in the title race, handing us an unassailable lead at the top of the table even before our penultimate match against Mara Sugar.
Thousands of Green Army faithful turned up at a fully packed Nyayo National Stadium for the final match of the season against Nairobi United, eager to witness the coronation and trophy presentation. Even though the visitors won 1-0, that could not dampen the spirit of the party on the terraces as fans celebrated throughout.
The championship caps off a remarkable campaign that saw Gor Mahia reclaim the title and qualify for next season’s CAF Champions League. More importantly, it adds another chapter to the club’s illustrious history as K’Ogalo continue to set the standard in Kenyan football.
