Coach Charles Akonnor says preparations for the club’s upcoming CAF encounter against Egyptian Pyramids FC are progressing well, with the tactician expressing confidence in his players ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated clash.
Akonnor acknowledged the quality and experience of Pyramids, describing the Egyptian side as a strong opponent, but insisted Gor Mahia are focused on their own preparations and are ready to rise to the occasion.
“It is another opportunity to showcase what we have, we are doing it against a very good side and we are preparing adequately and the players are getting it right and I believe we are capable of doing it.”
Akonnor also acknowledged Pyramids as a tough opponent but remained confident of readiness to face the Egyptian side.
“The preparations are going on very well. We know we are facing a very good team, they are a very tough team, but we are also a good team and we have been preparing well for this match,” Akonnor said.
The Ghanaian coach noted that the team has been working on different aspects of its game as they seek to produce a strong performance against the continental heavyweights.
“We have been working on our tactics, our fitness and also the mental aspect because these are the kind of matches where you need to be fully prepared. We know what is expected of us on Sunday,” he added.
Akonnor believes playing against a team of Pyramids’ calibre will provide Gor Mahia with an opportunity to demonstrate their quality on the continental stage.
“Pyramids have good players and they have experience in African competitions. We respect them and this match will also give our players a chance to fight for their places in the national team.”
The Gor Mahia boss has urged his players to remain disciplined and focused throughout the encounter, insisting that every detail could prove decisive in a high-level CAF fixture.
“We have to be disciplined, stay together and fight for every ball. If we do what we have been training and play with confidence, then we can get a positive result,” Akonnor stated.
