Our quest for a successful Kenyan Premier League campaign suffered an early setback after 1-0 loss to Bidico United in season opener at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
Despite the disappointing result on the scoreboard, head coach Charles Akonnor projected an aura of unwavering confidence, choosing to focus on the positives from his team’s overall performance rather than the final outcome.
In his post-match analysis, Akonnor was emphatic that his team was the dominant force for the vast majority of the contest.
“It was positive in terms of how we played… We controlled the game and were able to create chances but what we lacked was the opportunity to score goals,” the coach stated.
He pinpointed a lack of clinical finishing as the sole reason for the defeat, adding: “We need to have a bit of composure in the final third to score the goals.”
This theme of self-inflicted hardship was central to his explanation. Akonnor argued that Bidico’s opportunities arose not from their own creativity, but from unforced errors.
“The only time the opponents came into the game was when we casually lost the balls… it was always our fault to get them in the game but we played very well,” he elaborated.
Rather than signaling panic or a need for tactical overhaul, Akonnor’s message was one of steadfast belief and minor adjustment. He insists the foundation for success is firmly in place. The plan is not to change the team’s style of play, but to double down on it while rigorously improving their efficiency in front of goal.
The focus now shifts immediately to redemption. The boys have a quick opportunity to translate coach’s philosophy into points when they face Sofapaka in their next league match on Saturday.
