Gor Mahia extended their lead at the summit of the SportPesa League on Sunday in 0-0 stalemate against Bandari at Kasarani Stadium.
The result sees K’Ogalo climb to 58 points, three clear of second-placed AFC Leopards, yet the evening was overshadowed by dramatic officiating controversies.
The match seemed destined for a quiet finish until the 85th minute, when referee overturned a penalty call after an incident in the box.
Referee received a communication from the fourth official and after a brief, tense consultation, the decision was shockingly overturned. No penalty.
As if that wasn’t enough, the drama took another twist deep into added time. Five minutes of stoppage time were added, but the centre referee inexplicably blew the final whistle after only one minute of those five had been played.
The early termination sent Gor Mahia’s technical bench and players into a furious protest, with coaches gesticulating wildly toward the match officials as Bandari’s bench and players seemed to celebrate the one point picked.
Despite the chaos, the single point was enough to keep Gor Mahia atop the standings. With six matches remaining in the season, the title race is tightening into a two-horse chase.
Off the pitch, the club reported a respectable turnout, collecting KSh.958,600 from 3,031 tickets sold as confirmed by the club’s treasuer Gerphas Okuku.
In the dressing room, thieves raided, making off with players’ phones, money and other valuables. A report was filed at Kasarani Police Station and a probe has been launched.
All eyes now turn to Sunday’s massive league clash, where Gor Mahia will face second-placed AFC Leopards.
A win could stretch the lead to six points; a loss would see rivals draw level.
