Gor Mahia vs Sofapaka: Behind the numbers

January 30, 2026

Gor Mahia and Sofapaka have crossed paths 35 times in league competition since their first meeting in 2009, a rivalry shaped by contrasting journeys and defining moments.

Sofapaka arrived in the top flight that year with strong financial backing, quickly assembling one of the league’s most competitive squads. Gor Mahia, meanwhile, were in the early stages of a revival after spending much of the previous seven years battling for survival.

Their maiden encounter on 4 April 2009 set the tone. An emerging George Odhiambo “Blackberry” scored for K’Ogalo, but Sofapaka claimed a 2–1 victory through John Baraza and Charles Melubo. Gor would gain revenge in the return leg in September, again thanks to Blackberry, whose strike sealed a 1–0 win. Sofapaka went on to lift the league title that season, with Gor finishing fifth.

That victory sparked a strong run for K’Ogalo. Gor Mahia went 10 league matches unbeaten against Batoto Ba Mungu, recording five wins and five draws. The most significant of these came on 23 October 2013, when Danny Sserunkuma’s solitary goal in a 1–0 win at Kasarani effectively ended Sofapaka’s title challenge and paved the way for Gor Mahia’s first league crown in 18 years. It was a defining moment that permanently etched Sserunkuma’s name into Green Army folklore.

The rivalry also delivered drama during the 2014 title race, which involved Gor Mahia, Sofapaka, and Tusker. With crucial points at stake late in the season, Sofapaka edged Gor 3–2 on 26 October in a tense match marred by crowd trouble. However, Sofapaka later dropped points in their penultimate fixture, and Gor Mahia capitalized with a decisive final-day win in Kisumu to retain the league title.

Fast forward to the present, and Gor Mahia are enjoying an 11-match unbeaten league run against Batoto Ba Mungu. Avoiding defeat in the upcoming meeting would surpass their previous longest stretch against Sofapaka, recorded between 2009 and 2014.

While Sofapaka’s financial muscle in their early years helped popularize the influx of foreign players into the Kenyan league, Gor Mahia’s overseas recruits have often thrived in this fixture.

Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw is the latest to make his mark, joining a list that includes Danny Sserunkuma, Baba Kizito, Khalid Aucho, Meddie Kagere, Jacques Tuyisenge, Jules Ulimwengu, and Peter Lwassa. Adu-Kwaw also became the first Gor Mahia player to score a brace against Sofapaka in league action, in a fixture that has yet to produce a hat-trick.

Despite the foreign influence, it is local hero Sammy Onyango who leads Gor Mahia’s scoring chart in this matchup with four goals, followed closely by George Odhiambo “Blackberry” on three.

Players with two goals apiece include Julius Owino, Rama Salim, Danny Sserunkuma, Meddie Kagere, Innocent Wafula, Jules Ulimwengu, and Adu-Kwaw.

Defensively, Gor Mahia have also asserted dominance. Across the 35 league meetings, K’Ogalo have kept an impressive 21 clean sheets, including a remarkable run of six consecutive shutouts between May 2011 and October 2013. By contrast, Sofapaka have managed just eight clean sheets against Gor Mahia.

As the two sides prepare to meet again, history suggests tight contests, big moments, and the ever-present possibility of another chapter being added to a rivalry rich in narrative and significance.
