Heroes of hate: Architects of Derby glory

December 3, 2025

Gor Mahia – AFC Leopards derbies are often tense, tactical, and emotionally charged affairs. Even the most prolific scorers can struggle under the weight of expectation and the electric atmosphere.

Yet, across the decades, a special group of players has risen above the pressure, producing not just crucial goals, but multiple goals in a single derby.

These performances are rare, iconic and forever etched into Gor Mahia folklore.

Today, we celebrate the K’Ogalo heroes who scored braces or even a hat-trick in the Mashemeji Derby.

William Ouma ‘Chege’ (2 goals) – 05 May 1968

Our first superstar, known for his flair and flamboyance, Chege set the tone for generations to come.

In the very first Mashemeji Derby, he scored both goals in a 2–0 victory, firmly establishing his legend. Despite serving part of the season in jail for an assault case, he still finished as top scorer with 19 goals.

Laban Otieno (Hat-trick) – 22 February 1975

Brought in to replace icons who left for Luo Union in 1974, Laban quickly won over the Green Army. After an 18-goal haul in his debut season, he carved his name into history with the only hat-trick ever scored in the Mashemeji Derby as Gor demolished AFC Leopards 5–1.

Allan Thigo (2 goals) – 02 October 1976, FA Cup

In a season where we completed an unbeaten league campaign, fans dreamed of a league–cup double. Thigo kept the dream alive, scoring twice in a 4–1 thrashing of Abaluhya in the Challenger’s Cup first round.

Wins over GEMA FC and Nyundo FC followed, before we exited in the semi-finals to Luo Union after a replay.

William Obwaka (2 goals) – 27 January 1985, CECAFA

This was the stuff of legend.

With many of our players suspended from continental competitions due to the Zamalek incident, we entered the CECAFA final as underdogs, yet Obwaka, then a medical student at the University of Nairobi, rose to the occasion.

He scored both goals in a 2–0 win in Khartoum, delivering Gor Mahia the regional crown and securing his immortal status.

Sammy Onyango ‘Jogoo’ (2 goals) – 02 August 1986

Our all-time top scorer, and the man with the most derby goals, Jogoo struck twice to give us a 2–0 halftime lead at City Stadium. However, Leopards staged a comeback to win 3–2, a painful defeat that hurt our league title defense.

Still, Jogoo’s influence on derby history remains unmatched.

Hezron Osuka (2 goals) – 05 March 1988, League

Fresh from our historic 1987 treble triumph, Gor were completing league backlog fixtures when new signing Hezron Osuka delivered a derby brace to earn a 2–2 draw. A perfect way to announce himself.

Dan Sserunkuma (2 goals) – 24 September 2012

It took 43 derbies and 14 years for another brace, and it came from a man destined to haunt AFC Leopards.

Signed mid-season, Sserunkuma inspired a title charge after a poor start. His derby brace in a 2-1 win helped us leapfrog Leopards in the standings, part of the six total league goals he scored against them, a record shared with Jogoo.

Dan Sserunkuma (2 goals) – 24 July 2014

Two years later, Danny did it again.

His brace secured a 2–2 draw that proved crucial in the title race, one we eventually won on the final day.

It was also his last derby contribution before leaving the club. Leopards were surely relieved to see him go.

Nicholas Kipkirui (2 goals) – 19 May 2019

“Kip” had already delivered in big games, including continental trips but this derby brace in a 3–1 win cemented his bond with the Green Army. A performance worthy of a future favourite.

Gnamien Gislain Yipké (2 goals) – 10 November 2019

The Ivorian may not have fully lived up to expectations, but on this derby day he shone bright scoring twice in a commanding 4–1 victory, our second-best derby scoreline.

Benson Omalla (2 goals) – 07 October 2023

One of the greatest strikers to wear the green and white, Omalla left Gor Mahia with 52 goals in all competitions and the club record of 26 league goals in a single season.

His derby brace in the 2–0 win was sweet revenge coming right after our first derby defeat in 13 matches.

These are the derby double legends

In a fixture defined by pressure, noise, rivalry, and emotion, these players rose above the moment twice. Their goals have shaped derby history and given the Green Army memories that will last forever.

Who will be the next to join this elite list?
