Sakari delighted with dream debut, settles in fast

July 26, 2026

Defender Daniel Sakari has described his debut for the club as nothing short of a dream start, as the right-back opened up about his seamless integration into the squad setup ahead of tomorrow’s crucial CECAFA 2026 Group A clash against Vipers SC.

Sakari, who played a pivotal role in the emphatic 5-0 demolition of APR on Friday, expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to don the famous green and white jersey for the first time in a competitive fixture.

“What a start I would have loved and it came to pass. The beginning always matters and I think it was a good start. I thank God,” Sakari reflected.

The defender’s composed performance at the back was instrumental in keeping a clean sheet against the Rwandan champions and he credited his rapid adaptation to the familiarity he shares with several of his new teammates.

“I think I have settled in well considering many of my teammates here, we have interacted with them at the national team level and may be from previous clubs, so I feel at home,” Sakari reflected.

That sense of belonging will be crucial as Gor Mahia prepare for their second group match against Ugandan giants Vipers SC tomorrow, with kick-off scheduled for 4pm Kenyan time at the Kigali Pele Stadium. A win would secure passage to the semi-finals.

While Sakari acknowledges the magnitude of the task ahead, he remains confident in his side’s ability to get the job done though he is under no illusions about the quality of the opposition.

“I think it’s just a game at a time… we go there and get a win, though I know it will be tough. Vipers is a good side; they are the champions in Uganda, so we know them. We will approach the game seriously.”

With his debut now firmly in the rearview mirror and a settled place in the squad, Sakari will be eager to replicate his solid display and help steer one step closer to CECAFA glory.
