Gor Mahia will have to navigate a crucial phase of the season without their defensive lynchpin, Sylvester Owino, after the centre-back sustained a significant injury during yesterday’s 3-1 win against Ulinzi Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
The incident occurred during the heated fixture when Owino went down on the pitch, visibly distressed and complaining of severe pain and difficulty moving his leg.
The discomfort was immediate enough to force an early substitution, raising immediate concerns within the K’Ogalo camp.
Those concerns were validated after the player underwent medical assessments on Sunday night. Team Doctor Brian Odongo confirmed that scans revealed a muscle tear.
“He was referred for further evaluation where an MRI confirmed a partial tear of the lower medial gastrocnemius muscle belly,” Team Doctor, Odongo stated.
The doctor outlined a clear timeline for the defender’s recovery. Sylvester will now begin a period of medication and rest, followed by a structured rehabilitation program.
“He is expected to be out for six weeks before returning to play subject to his recovery progress,” Odongo added.
The news comes as a significant setback for head coach Charles Akonnor, who views Owino as a vital component of his tactical setup.
“It’s a big blow to us more so at this crucial stage of the season,” Akonnor admitted.
However, the coach struck a resilient tone, insisting the team would cope: “We will have to find a way on how to navigate with the available players because they are equal to the task. We just hope no setback again in terms of injuries.”
With Sylvester sidelined, the responsibility of manning the heart of the Gor Mahia defence will now fall to Frank Odhiambo and Mike Kibwage as the team looks to maintain its title charge.
